I had been accumulating a lot of images and ideas for new work that I wasn’t exactly sure what to do with and I became curious to see what would happen if I abandoned the modernist idea of “signature style.” I also stopped relying primarily on drawings as source images and worked with cut vinyl stencils from vector files that were then directly applied onto the paintings as masks. Over the next few years I made a number of paintings that didn’t rely on preliminary drawings. Here are a few drawings that found their way into paintings for my 1995 at Stride Gallery in Calgary in an exhibition entitled “The Rest of Our Lives.”
