I began making painted sculptures at art school in 1975, just before I started making paintings. I’ve continued making objects on and off over the years. On a trip to Italy in 2011, I became really interested in the vernacular stiles and steps that I saw on the street and in churches. I made one using plywood based on the proportions of one that I liked.
Then between 2008 and 2018, I made a number walking sticks on Galiano Island that related to some very early objects that I had made when I was an art student.
In 2018, I began a very productive collaboration with Vancouver ceramicist Tam Irving. His knowledge of ceramics helped me realize a number of platters based on forms and molds that he had on hand in his studio in Horseshoe Bay.
